A word from Kerri

Mathematics

I am sure many of you would have read or watched the commentary over the past months about the teaching of mathematics in New Zealand schools. There is further commentary at present about the quality of teacher training in the area of mathematics and literacy.

We have been privileged to have high quality student teachers spending time at our school and are very lucky to have Claire Turner (Associate Principal) on the review panel for Initial Teacher Education review panel (an arm of the Teachers Council). There is currently some very comprehensive work going on behind the scenes to address the gaps in knowledge.

There have also been articles in the New Zealand Herald pointing to the number of teachers in schools, not teaching mathematics at all, skipping sessions, due to a lack of planning, knowledge and accountability.

One thing we can boast at Bayfield, is that as our teachers work in collaborative teams, there is a high level of accountability and we are able to learn and share knowledge and expertise in a range of curriculum areas.

This allows the school to ensure that teaching and learning, coverage and the upskilling of teacher knowledge.

Most recently there was a comprehensive debate on the TVNZ Q&A programme

https://www.tvnz.co.nz/shows/q-and-a/episodes/s2021-e11

which makes for very interesting viewing.

In the next newsletter, I will share about how this debate relates to Bayfield School and how we teach our teachers and children, knowledge, strategy and problem solving.

Over the past 18 months Bayfield School has undertaken professional development in the teaching of mathematics and we are planning on sharing videos and running a parent evening with an expert facilitator to share more with parents about the mathematics programmes we teach.

Cross Country - Tomorrow @ Cox’s Bay

Races will begin at 1pm

We prefer all children to stay and watch/cheer on their housemates, but if you do need to take your child early, they must be signed out with Norma (Yr 3/4) and Don (Yr 5/6). They will be wearing Yellow vests so will be easy to find.

Wheels Days @ Lunchtimes
