A word from Kerri
Welcome back to this exciting term! We have a fabulous term ahead. This term the children are focused on our overall topic of Survival. This topic builds on both the knowledge of science phenomena and processes allowing children to apply and use literacy, numeracy and science to these areas.
At Bayfield, we balance the teaching and learning of our curriculum through direct teaching of knowledge, opportunities to test and explore, time to make connections and find information to build on their knowledge.
I am sure that your children will be coming home with new learning to share with you! I recently learned about the Coral Sea Snake from a learner in the Kowhai team.
The NZ Science curriculum covers 4 areas: Nature of Science, Living World, Planet, Earth and Beyond, Physical World and Material world.

Canvases
Thank you to those parents who bid for the canvases last term. If you were the successful bidder don’t forget to pick up your canvases from the school office!
Teacher only day
In the 2019 pay negotiations and updates to the Primary Teachers Collective Agreement, schools were allocated 8 teacher only days to use over the period of the new agreement.
We have utilised one in May 2020, for specific learning about the new digital curriculum. At this teacher only day we had a dedicated facilitator take us through our obligations and planning for implementing the curriculum.
On Friday the 23rd of October we are holding our second Teacher Only Day to work on our curriculum and assessment tools for learning and teaching.
We hope you are able to use this extra day to extend Labour weekend as a family.
SKIDS will be open on this day. Please book online asap to ensure they have the correct staff:child ratio http://skids.aimy.co.nz
Tickets are available to purchase via Kindo
The Path of the People - Te ara o te koha aroha
Thanks again to all the families who have donated bricks. Over 220 families have donated for over 400 children. We will be confirming the engraved names over the next week.
The Path of the People has already raised over $50,000 for the school, which is an incredible result. It will help enable the continued provision of school resources over and above the basic Ministry standards.
The path will be a fun walkway across the mud in winter, and the garden a fantastic educational resource, for years to come. Having the back gate open again will ease parking and congestion on Clifton and Jervois Roads.
We are grateful for the way the Bayfield community has come together again to support the needs of the school and to celebrate our very special Bayfield community with this legacy path.
The Path of the People is te ara o te koha aroha (the path built with gifts of love).

Book Bonanza
Monday 2nd November to Friday 6th November
Book Fair in the library
As part of Book Bonanza we will be running a book fair in the library. Bayfield families are very generous when purchasing books for our school library. We have selected books for people to choose in a range of prices.
All books selected will have a slip placed on the inside cover acknowledging the families who donate books. If you are unable to come to school and you would like to make a donation a voucher can be purchased on KINDO prior to the Book Bonanza and teachers will be happy to assist the children to choose the books.
Books are available to be purchased from the library from:
8.20 - 12.00am on Monday 2nd November (Grandparents Day and Special Friends Day)
8.20 - 10.50am on Friday 6th November (Book Parade Day)
We will have an eftpos machine in the library to make transactions more convenient.
Grandparents’ Day: Monday 2nd November
The Book Fair is open from 8.20am in the library. Our special grandparents’ and special friends assembly is from 9-10am in the hall. From 10-10.50am grandparents and family members can visit classrooms to read stories with the children. It is also an opportunity to view our learning spaces and the children’s work.
During this time you are welcome to visit the library with your grandchild to choose a book to donate to the library. At 10.50am there will be a grandparents’ morning tea in the hall.
Book Bonanza Dress-up Parade
Families are invited to attend the Book Bonanza dress-up parade at 9.00am on Friday, 6th November. For the book parade children can dress up as their favourite character if they wish.
Book Poster or Book Trailer Competition
As part of our book week children have the opportunity to create a poster or a book trailer to promote their favourite book. These will be due on Monday, 2nd November. Winners will be announced at the assembly on Monday, 6th November.
