A Word from Kerri

Firstly, on behalf of the Board of Trustees and the school we want to thank the community for paying the school donation. Over the past two months we have had a number of families and extended families make additional donations to the school and this is greatly appreciated and makes an enormous difference to our school. Thank you for your generosity and kindness.

We are enormously proud of the learners at Bayfield and their ability to share their learning and goals with their parents at the learning conferences.

Their ability to review their goals and take responsibility for their learning links to our vision of being inspired today and prepared for tomorrow. We want our learners to develop self management, evaluation and reflection skills to ensure that they become “lifelong learners”.

A reminder to parents, that if you want the chance to have a more in depth conversation with teachers, without your child present, please contact the learning leader or teachers in the team. Our teachers are very open and accommodating and you do not have to have an issue with learning, to make a time to talk about your child and their learning journey.

Road works
Auckland Transport has informed us that work on the Argyle/Clifton Road intersections will begin on Thursday 6 August and this will take approximately 4 weeks to complete.
Please note that work is weather dependent and may affect the finishing date.  The works include a new T- intersection raised table, new kerbs and new footpaths.
Temporary traffic management and speed restrictions will be in place around the work site. The traffic control in place will be a three way stop go operation (stop/go set up on Clifton Road (near the Argyle St intersection) as well as both sides of the intersection on Argyle Street. Access will be maintained throughout the construction phase however, there may be some slight delays during peak hour(s) travelling through the work zone.
You may want to consider walking or using the Jervois Road entrances over the next few weeks, as we have noticed increased congestion with the narrowing of the entrance to Clifton Road.
We have recently been informed that Auckland Transport is using its new patrol car to photograph and subsequently fine people who are parking illegally outside the school.

Learning At Bayfield
A word from Bevan - Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT)
Mathematics – Years 3, 4, 5, 6
Listening Comprehension – Years 3, 4, 5, 6

Each year the school uses the Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT) to supplement our assessment of our Year 3-6 learners.

These are norm-referenced assessments that show how students are achieving compared to others of the same age group at a given point in time and provide results in stanines.

Progress Achievement Tests (PAT) enable teachers to make valid and reliable comparisons of achievement for their students and against other students nationally. They also provide teachers with valid and reliable assessment information to identify individual, class and year group strengths and areas of improvement and learning needs to inform teaching and learning.

Methods of gaining information: The PAT tests are multi-choice timed assessments that were completed in Term 1/2, these results are based on students’ performance on one day. In order to make informed decisions about students’ learning needs, these results need to be supplemented with information on the past achievement and the present circumstances of each student.

As teachers, we use this information to support our Overall Teacher Judgements (OTJ) which informs the progress and achievement reporting that the school undertakes. It also gives the school a picture of where Bayfield School sits against other learners of the same year level across New Zealand.

Curriculum and Assessment at Bayfield
Reading and the New Zealand Curriculum

As children enter their first year at Bayfield School they will begin their formal learning to read journey. As many of you will have experienced, your children will come up with simple texts, dominated by pictures or illustrations to support your child to comprehend the story as they begin to decode ( read words).

These stories are shared in what is called a guided reading session with their teacher, in these sessions the teachers listen to the children reading, support them to use their fingers to track the words as they read, start to share their prior knowledge or connections to the stories and start to find words that they recognise - this learning to read journey moves steadily through what is called the colour wheel until the end of 3 years at school or once they reach the end of the colour wheel (Gold) after this time the children move to Reading to learn.

Reading to learn is where the children can use texts to find information, look at deeper comprehension questions, discuss the motivations of character and use decoding skills to self correct.

Some examples of how we teach reading at Bayfield:

Guided Reading
Children read in ability groups with a teacher. The teacher and the group make predictions about the text, ask comprehension questions,  explore vocabulary,  make inferences and evaluate the text.

Shared Reading
Shared reading is done with larger groups and could be based around a big book, shared novel or poem. The teacher chooses a range of specific learning experiences and the group of children scan, select, choose examples in the text linked to the learning experiences. As the text becomes more sophisticated, the group may discuss character motivations, ethical dilemmas and make connections to their own personal experiences.

Response to text activities
These activities are about consolidating reading skills taught in guided and shared reading and often take the form of comprehension questions, cloze activities ( where a word is omitted and the child chooses the correct word to complete the sentence or phrase), inference, evaluation or vocabulary questions can also be included in these tasks.

Helpful Links

Helping out another school:
Flat Bush Primary School in Otara, has seen an increase in demand for their breakfast and lunch at schools programme.

As a school we would like to support them, so if you are interested and would like to help out, pop into the office and drop off some canned food, breakfast cereals e.g. Weetbix and we can take it out to their school and support them and their community.

A box will be outside the office from tomorrow to place items in.

Moving on from Bayfield
Each year we ask families to let us know if they are intending to move to other cities, towns or schools in 2021. This helps us to plan appropriately for 2021 and the places offered in our October Ballot.

Please let Linda know if you have plans for your child/ren to leave Bayfield at the end of 2020.

Art Exhibition
Please also let teachers know if you are interested in helping during our art creation weeks, or know of any artists who would be able to come and help our children complete their collaborative canvases.
