Staffing Updates
We are very fortunate to have Meredith Thornley who has started this term in Titoki.
Sarah Vile remains on leave this term and Rose Watson is continuing to teach in the Year 3 space with Amanda Dallow as the Learning Leader. Our thoughts are with Sarah and her family at this time.
Kerri is helping to run basketball with Donna and Claire.
We also welcome Lyra and Carrie who are new Learning Assistants who will be working in the Puriri.
Disco last term!
A huge thank you to the BCG for running our very successful disco last term. It was a wonderful night and we raised $600 for Star Jam! The Nice Blocks were such a hit! The BCG will be selling these again towards the end of this term - so keep an eye out for them too.
Term 3
This term we are continuing with our focus on Science, The Olympics, Speeches for our senior school with each team spending time exploring, developing and learning more about each of these areas. We are also supplementing our learning with the Quizard Wizards!
Please check out each team's term overview for more information about the exciting term ahead.

Curriculum Levels and your child.
Sometimes when you receive some information about your child’s progress and it may say “Bobby is working at Level 3 in the curriculum and is at or above expected level” You may wonder what exactly this means and how it relates to their year at school or their age.
Our curriculum is split into years and levels (which cover two year levels at school).
A child who is 5 years old will work at level one of the curriculum till they have spent two years ( 40 weeks at school). Year 3 and Year 4 is level 2 of the curriculum and then Year 5 and 6 are Level 3.
So if your child is in Year 5 and is working at level 4 in maths, reading or writing then they are working at a Year 7 and 8 level.
Sometimes you may be wondering where your child sits in comparison to their peers. Well at Bayfield we usually have an average of 30% of our children working above expected level in each year level. So if your child is working above they would sit in the top 20 of their class.
In our class spaces we do not teach the curriculum level by age, but we teach by ability and sometimes a child in Year 3 may be working at a level 3 or 4 level and will be taught the curriculum content appropriate to their academic ability.
Bayfield School Reporting to Parents and Learning Conferences
Thank you to those families who have made their conference bookings. If you have yet to do so bookings can be made through the School Interviews website the code is s4cvg. Bookings will close at midday on Monday.
At Bayfield we firmly believe that the entire focus of the conference must be learning, and if the ownership of the learning is with the child, then the best person to talk about the learning IS the child. Not only that, when students have the opportunity to talk to their parents about learning it significantly assists with that learning. This view of learning conferences is firmly backed up by robust research and is how most schools organise what used to be referred to as ‘Parent-Teacher Interviews’.
Additionally, as in our collaborative learning environment, the students have more than one teacher, each one of the teachers are likely to have knowledge about your child’s learning.
Student Led Conferences
Mid-Year 2021
Younger children or siblings can come to Kerri’s office to play and draw whilst siblings finish their conferences.
What to Expect at the Learning Conference?
Bayfield’s Quizard Wizards
This year’s fundraiser is underway! A knowledge-athon, culminating in an all-school wizard-themed multiple-choice Kahoot quiz on Friday 13th August. Children study their chosen topics and are sponsored for questions answered correctly. Pledges can also be made.
The objective is to raise essential funds towards the BCG income goal of $50,000 for the school, and to provide an opportunity for the children to build on their current learning and increase their general knowledge, numeracy and literacy skills.
All children need to choose their topics using this sign up form by this Friday 30 July.
Visit the online learning hub for the following information:
- a printable question and answer sheet for each category for each year group
- a printable sponsorship form (all children brought home a printed copy of this on the last Friday of last term)
- FAQs
Lunchtime learning sessions (aka ‘Wizard Wednesdays’) will be run in the Imagination Station for children wanting support with their learning.
We hope that parents and the wider community will get in behind this fundraiser and support our young learners to become subject experts!
Please email BayfieldBCG@gmail.com if you have any questions or if you can assist with ‘Wizard Wednesdays’ or Quiz Day
Lost Property
Our bins are already overflowing with unnamed items that were left behind at the end of last term. Please check it out for items belonging to your family.
Any remaining items that are there on Friday afternoon will be donated to charity.
Nits
These continue to be a nuisance for so many families.
Can parents / caregivers please check & treat (if necessary) children’s hair regularly.
Net Safety Week 2021, Family Zone & Bayfield Cyber Safety Hub
Net Safety Week 2021
This week Netsafe has launched New Zealand’s first dedicated online safety awareness week. The aim of the week is to inspire positive change and help communities stay safe online in response to the alarming levels of harm we continue to see. Netsafe Ceo - Martin Cocker.
If as parents you are interested in viewing some of the information and resources that Netsafe have available please visit their website or view the attached Online Parent Safety Toolkit.
Bayfield Family Zone Insight & Bayfield Cyber Safety Hub
As part of our commitment to cyber safety Bayfield has partnered with Linewize to provide Bayfield parents with free access to Family Zone, a tool that parents can utilise at home to gain insights into student device use.
Family Zone Insights is designed to give parents the information needed to help guide their children in making informed, healthy decisions about their online behaviour. It provides weekly snapshot reports about online activity, and offers access to the latest advice from cyber experts, including app reviews and parent guides, to help you with your child’s online development.
Getting Started with Family Zone
Our Bayfield Cyber Safety Hub also has a plethora of information for parents to deal with a range of issues that come with navigating the digital world with children. There is also a link to the hub on the school website.
Bayfield’s New Junior School Playground
We are very excited to inform our school community that later this term a new junior school playground will be installed.
Late last year we went through a consultation process with the year 1 children to establish what they wanted in a playground. The children drew their own designs, labeled them and wrote about them. Here is the final design.
The playground is being funded by the Ministry of Education, through the School Investment Package funding that we were given in 2020.
