Let’s Get Inspired- Friday 14th of May
A word from Kerri
We have finally come to the end of the term and what a term we have had. It seems like so long ago that we were working online and waiting for alert levels to change and it has been so good to have been able to carry on the majority of our term without further disruption.
We wish all families a safe and happy time over the next two weeks.
Our thoughts go out to Westmere School who lost a beloved staff member this week. Julie-Ann True or JA as she was known had worked for over 15 years at Westmere School as a teacher and deputy principal. Many families in the greater Westmere and Ponsonby area will remember JA for her energy and commitment to her school. A difficult time for Westmere School and their community.
Our lovely Michaela in Year 1 has announced that she and her husband Elliot are expecting their first child in September. We are so happy for Michaela. This means that Michaela will take maternity leave from the middle of term 3. We are in the process of finding her maternity leave replacement and will keep the community updated as we progress.
Teacher only Day - Kahui Ako Day
4th of June
On June the 4th the school will be closed for a teacher only day for all teachers in our Kahui Ako o Waitemata (Community of Learning). Our Kahui Ako is made up of the following schools:
Bayfield School, Ponsonby Primary School, Ponsonby Intermediate School, Freemans Bay School, Richmond Road School, Grey Lynn School, Westmere School, Pasadena Intermediate, Point Chevalier School and Western Springs / Nga Puna Waiorea
Our focuses for the Kahui Ako in 2021 are:
Cultural Capabilities ( how to ensure that we teach in a culturally responsive way.)
Wellbeing and Supported Learners ( making sure we are catering to the wellbeing needs of our learners and support all children with additional needs)
Collaborative pedagogies ( how we can collaborate as teachers in our learning spaces and how we allow learners to understand their learning journeys)
Kōrero- oracy in Te Reo Māori ( in the bilingual and full immersion context)
On this teacher only day, our teachers and leaders will attend workshops and professional learning around the Kahui Ako focus areas to upskill and progress these areas in our own schools.
New staff for Term 2
Change of Teacher’s in Year 6 from Term 2-Term 4
Trish Fransham (currently year 5) and Ashleigh Emslie (currently year 6) will both give up their current full-time roles and instead share a single full-time role in year 6 and work alongside Steph Martin.
New Teacher in Year 5
Don Neill (who worked at Bayfield in 2019 and 2020) is going to teach in Year 5 with Natalie Hayes. He is very much looking forward to returning to Bayfield. After a short period at Kowhai Intermediate, Don advises that he very much missed the collaborative and progressive environment at Bayfield. We are very excited to welcome him back.
New Teachers for Titoki roll growth
Tessa Deutshle
We have employed Tessa Deutshle to work in the Titoki team from term 2 (starting Monday 24th of May). Tessa has been working at an International School in Lucerne, Switzerland and is returning home to New Zealand. Tessa has previously worked at Point Chevalier School and travelled to Switzerland to learn German, expand her knowledge of her family’s heritage, and to travel.
She has an extensive musical, art and drama background, which will be a huge asset to the Titoki team and to our school.
Ursula Hall
In term 3 the Titoki team will be joined by Ursula Hall, Ursula is an experienced teacher who has worked at Richmond Road School and Massey Primary. She is a very enthusiastic and passionate teacher who has strengths in visual art and literacy. Ursula is going to do some relieving over term 2, so will be around for you to meet.
New Learning Assistant in Year 2
Claudia McGough
Claudia is joining the Year 2 team as a Learning Assistant in the Kowhai team in Term 2. She brings with her an eagerness to learn, experience in supporting children with learning challenges and a great sense of fun. She will be known by the children as “Claud” to avoid any confusions! We are really looking forward to her joining the team.
Events in Term 2
Lets get Inspired - Friday 14th May
Teachers are finalising their activities for this exciting event. All children will receive a survey to select their top 3 favourite activities and will be assigned one of those for the day. Please respond to the survey in the first week of the holidays so that the whole school can be assigned an activity for organisation of groups as soon as possible. The activities cannot go ahead without parent support so please if you are able to, let us know of your availability through the survey. Activities this year include Circability, Junior Masterchef, building lego tables and even white water rafting. Some activities will have age restrictions.
Our Fridge List is coming home tomorrow with all events - this will be available on our website and a printed version will come home in school bags.
Trip sign up form
This term there are not as many school trips or events as term one. But we would like to trial a booking form where parents can indicate if they can help us with trips or school events. Please read through the form below and click on when you can help and teachers can
https://forms.gle/CRbK5HcJhty9vnMQA
Lost Property
Please check out the lost property bins in the classrooms and outside the school office before the end of Friday. Any items left will be donated to the charity.
It would be appreciated if parents would please clearly name drink bottles, lunch boxes and clothing - this way we can identify and return items to children.
Library help needed
Do you have a little spare time to offer some volunteer assistance?
We have some bundles of readers which require their seams taped.
The tape goes in 3 places - inside cover seams and centre over the staples. They are able to be done at school or taken home. If help you are able to help books can be collected from the library issue desk.
Any help small or large will be gratefully accepted!
Kind Regards
Isa Rive
